Caring For Your Lawn

Preparation

We have many local Landscape contractors that we can recommend for your prep work prior to hydroseeding.  A well prepared yard with soil that has been leveled, and weeds/debris removed will make for a successful new lawn.

Care of your newly hydroseeded yard

Spring and Fall Watering Schedule

The ideal temperature for continual growth is 50 degrees and above.  Ensuring that your hydroseed stays evenly moist is key to growth. Days 1-13:  Water 2 Times/Day (minimum) for 20 minutes (germination period)

  • Days 13-24 water 1 Time/Day for 25 minutes
  • Days 24-44 water 2 Times/Week for 30 minutes
  • Days 44 on water 1 Time/Week for 35 minutes

Be careful not to over water during these periods, avoid puddling.  Puddling can cause seed damage. Just remember to keep the mulch wet, don’t let it dry out for periods longer than 24 hours.

Summer Watering Schedule

When temperatures exceed 70 degrees extra watering is needed.

Homes with irrigation see exception below.

  • Days 1-10: water 3 times/Day (minimum) for 20 minutes (germination period)
  • Days 10-21: water 1-2 times/day for 25 minutes
  • Days 21-31:  water 1 time/day for 30 minutes
  • Days 31 on: water 2 times/week for 35 minutes

Exceptions to the above schedule to keep in mind

  • Soil condition: If your soil tends to be on the sandy side,  consider doubling the frequency shown above.  Sandy soil drains quickly, causing the soil to dry out faster.  If your soil content is high in clay, you will need to make sure you do not over water.  Clay soil does not drain as well and may create puddles.
  • Homes with irrigation systems can set their system to water 4 times per day at about 10 – 15 minutes per cycle during the summer months of high temperatures.  Adjust the time according to the type of sprinkler heads you have installed. All systems put out different amounts of water, avoid puddling.
  • Established Growth. Once your lawn has filled in and is at a height of about four inches, you will be able to mow for the first time.  At this time reduce your watering to about 1 inch of water per week.  We want to promote root growth. The roots will want to “chase water” and grow deep.  Once you have cut your lawn, the grass will begin to fill in as one blade of grass becomes two or more.

(Above) Growth in the 1st week (above 50 degrees)
